BACKYARD ADVENTURES an after-school enrichment program for young children!
Backyard Adventures: Children are natural observers and problem solvers.  Through hands on exploration they make discoveries, problem solve, and make meaningful connections.  Backyard Adventures encourages children to put their innate curiosity to work.  This program allows children to explore a variety of materials and complete related science experiments.

Parent comment:

"Hi everyone ... just wanted to share info on a very cool class C took this fall (and is continuing this winter).  Its called Backyard Adventures/Bookworms and it is run by a wonderful teacher named Courtney Arseneault at her home based pre-school in Ashland (super close to Holliston).  C absolutely adored the class and is looking forward to the winter session!  Just in case anyone is looking for a new activity for the winter I wanted to share the info on this hidden gem.  Courtney is also willing to let kids come for one or two classes to determine if its the right fit before committing to the entire term.  She is very flexible!"

Sneak peeks:
Rocks, Fossils, Trees, and More!

Children will explore a variety of rocks and how they are formed.  They will compare sizes, shapes, colors, textures, weight, and more.  Numerous experiments will be completed including rubbing rocks together, observing the effect water has on a rock's surface, and how rocks displace water in a container.  Children will grow crystals, create geode models, and make clay volcanoes for eruption.  Both real and replicate fossils will be examined, and we will discuss what fossils are and how they are formed.  Children will collect items from outside to prepare for making their own fossils.

Snow, Winter Habitats, Animal Tracks and More!
After hearing In the Snow: Who's Been Here?, children will go outside and look for animal tracks.  They will create track imprints in clay, measure tracks, and create animal models.  Children will explore items such as fur, feathers, a deer antler and more.  Many related experiments will be completed.   After a discussion about why animals have to store up food in the warmer months, children will examine an ice cube with a piece of fruit in it.  Children will smell it to see if they can smell the fruit and attempt to remove it from the ice.

These programs are located at Adventures in Learning (313 Cedar St in Ashland) and are offered to both pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children.  Children not currently enrolled in our preschool program may be dropped off at 12:30 or arrive by bus after Kindergarten for lunch. After lunch, all children will explore classroom areas and complete program activities.  Each day will also include outdoor play.  Dismissal is at 2:30.

Applications should be mailed and include a registration fee of $20 which will be applied toward tuition ($20 per class 12:30 drop off or $30 bus drop off/lunch option for 1/2 day kindergartners).  Spaces
will be filled on a first come first serve basis, and families will be given ten days to submit payment to secure their child's space.
Checks should be made out to Adventures in Learning.  Families will be notified by phone if a session is full, and be given the option of being placed on a wait list.

Backyard Adventures is a science based program for young children 4-6 years of age.  Each class includes the hands on exploration of minerals, animals, and/or plants and related science experiments.  Children will be encouraged to make observations, predictions, and ask questions.  Discoveries will be documented in a journal and/or by the creation of a model using a variety of natural and craft materials. Our goal is to bring out the naturalist in your child by helping them to see the amazing world located in our own backyards!
